HURRICANES SINK SHARKS

THE Wellington Hurricanes blew away the Sharks 34-18 in their Super 12 encounter in East London on Saturday. The Hurricanes led 24-15 at the break. The Sharks were convincingly outplayed by the visitors, obviously smarting from their 43-27 thrashing by the Cats last weekend. The South Africans, playing at the Basil Kenyon Stadium rather than their King’s Park home, failed to convert on several possessions. Innumerable handling errors added to their woes. A 15-minute, three try flurry which began eight minutes later sealed the Hurricanes victory. Tana Umaga, who played a central role in all three tries, dotted down the first after his forwards won turn-over ball in their own quarter, and the ball was run wide. The Sharks rallied in the second half but the game belonged to the Hurricanes, who attacked with confidence and fluidity, and stole possession effectively.
