FORMER SA Defence Force special forces member Noel Robey told the Truth and Reconciliation Commission on Thursday how Mamelodi activists Dr Fabian Ribeiro and his wife Florence were murdered in 1986. Robey told the TRC’s amnesty committee that the murders were committed by two unknown special forces members from Northern Namibia. He said he was instructed by the commander of the Northern Transvaal special forces unit, Charl Naude, to help the hit team familiarise themselves with the area where the Ribeiros lived. On the day of the murders, Robey collected the murder weapons, two silenced .45 Colt pistols, and another member of the special forces unit, Coenraad Vlietsra. He added that after the killings, a group of Mamelodi residents confronted the killers, who fired shots in the air to make good their escape. Robey said after the killings he took the hit men back to special forces headquarters and never saw them again. Robey was arrested by Mamelodi police shortly after the killings, but he was absolved of all liability at a judicial hearing and released.
