TREVOR TUTU PLEADS NOT GUILTY

TREVOR TUTU, the son of Truth and Reconciliation Commission chairman Desmond Tutu, pleaded not guilty to two charges of tax evasion in the Johannesburg Regional Court on Monday. The controversial Tutu told the court he could not pay tax or submit returns during 1996 and 1997 as he was a ”fugitive from justice” at the time, because he was being sought to face charges of making a bomb threat at the East London airport in October 1989. ”I could not disclose my personal details to a state department when I was a wanted person,” Tutu said. He subsequently received amnesty from the TRC for the bomb threat, and told the court on Monday that his amnesty application had included ”any other offences or omissions deriving from the contravention”, which, he claimed, included tax evasion and failing to appear in court. The case was postponed to June 7 for Tutu to provide the court with a copy of his amnesty application.
