JAPAN CONSIDERING NIGERIA AID

JAPANESE Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi Thursday told Nigeria’s incoming president he will “fully consider” resuming financial and other assistance including debt relief, a Japanese foreign affairs official said. “I have to improve the living standards of Nigerian people from the dictatorship era,” Nigeria’s president-elect Olusegun Obasanjo told the premier in a meeting in Tokyo. “I would like to request assistance from Japan,” he added. The Nigerian leader requested the resumption of Japanese economic assistance, political support in the international community, debt relief and the promotion of private investment, the official said. Japan will “fully consider” Nigeria’s request. Nigeria’s total foreign debt was estimated at $28-billion, the Japanese official said, adding that no truly reliable figures are available.
