ALGERIAN PRESIDENT SWORN IN

ABDELAZIZ Bouteflika was sworn in as Algeria’s new president on Tuesday. Bouteflika (62) won a presidential election on April 15 in which he stood as a sole candidate — and the one favored by the military establishment — following the withdrawal of six others on allegations of fraud. The circumstances of Bouteflika’s election drew expressions of “disappointment” from both France and the United States.Bouteflika officially garnered 73% of the vote on a turnout of 60%, while the ex-candidates said the actual turnout could not have been more than 30%.
