NAMIBIA is to host the Oceanic Tug of War Championships in July in Swakopmund, it was announced on Monday. This was one of the decisions taken by a historic Tug of War International Federation (TWIF) congress that was held on African soil for the first time the coastal town of Swakopmund the weekend. Between 500-700 participants will compete in the event that only caters for non-European countries. The championships will be held between July 7-11 in Swakopmund and will then take place in Japan two years later. Meanwhile, the congress also resolved that the Tug of War World Championships be held in the United Kingdom in the year 2000, in South Africa in 2002, in the United States of America during 2005, and in Holland in 2006. Participants at the congress also resolved to put pressure on the International Olympic Committee to include the sport in its games.
