BIG GUNS SILENT ON LANDMINES

BIG landmine producers and users such as the United States, China and Russia watched from the sidelines on Tuesday as the first meeting of the signatories of the 1997 Ottawa Treaty banning the production and marketing of mines entered its second day. Mozambican ambassador to the United States Carlos dos Santos said that only 15 out of a total of 50 large mine producers have still not signed the treaty. But these include the big producers, which are taking part at the conference as observers. But on Monday the US said it would only be ready to sign the treaty by 2006, while China said only it would not sign the treaty for reasons of national interest.
