A 900-ton arsenal of weapons was tracked down and destroyed in Mozambique during the last few months by a specialist unit of the South African Police Service. Sunday newspaper Rapport said the top secret operation formed part of Operation Rachel, which was started in 1995 to stop the flow of weapons into South Africa. Included in the haul were 12162 guns, of which 4245 were AK47 rifles. Also destroyed were 27550 explosive devices like landmines, limpet mines and anti-personnel mines. In addition, more than three million rounds of ammunition were destroyed; most of them AK47 rounds. Police spokeswoman Jennifer Chetty said it is not clear what the motive was of those who accumulated and sold the weapons. Many of the weapons were part of arsenals hoarded during the Mocambican war.
