STUDENTS MARCH FOR THEIR STOMACH

MORE than 200 students at a teachers’ college in Mpumalanga have won a battle for better food after boycotting the campus caterers for two days. Rector of Mgwenya College of Education, Ian Steenkamp said on Thursday that the 240 students would now get good meals. Students had complained that vegetarians, for example, were fed only cabbage for a whole month. “We’ll now meet with the students, caterers, management and education department to discuss the students complaints,” said Steenkamp. College management buckled on Thursday after students took buses on the 25km ride into Nelspruit and marched to the office of education MEC, David Mabuza, demanding that he intervene. Chief director Caiphus Mashaba told the students that senior officials would go to Mgwenya college on Friday solve the food problem.
