NUM WON’T DROP 25% DEMAND

THE National Union of Mineworkers said on Monday that it will not amend its 25% across-the-board wage increase demand before the start of negotiations on Tuesday. The talks, to be held separately with the Chamber of Mines and De Beers, will seek to thrash out a new two-year wage deal to replace the current agreement, which expires next month. NUM spokesperson Archie Phalane said the union’s demands are based on company profits for the previous trading period and not on future performance.
