WORLD CUP SONG RELEASED

THE cricket World Cup’s official song will be released here on Monday – 24 hours after hosts England were knocked out and 18 days after the launch of the tournament. The lyrics of the song, “Life is a carnival”, caused some wry amusement in the media. Its opening line, “Heroes come and heroes go”, according to the British press, clearly did not refer to Alec Stewart’s home side, who failed to reach the second round after being beaten by India. The Guardian, meanwhile, ridiculing the late release of the song – and England’s early exit – argued it should be translated immediately into Hindi, to cater for England’s South Asian population, who will presumably still be interested.

INJURY FORCES KINGSTON TO WITHDRAW

A BACK injury has forced James Kingston to withdraw from the R200000 Vodacom Series in KwaZulu-Natal at Selborne Country Club next week. The Southern Africa Tour confirmed on Monday that Kingston will miss out on the third Vodacom Series event of the year, from June 10-12. The Rustenburg Golf Club professional was scheduled to make a keenly anticipated return to the Vodacom Tour following a phenomenal run of success in Asia recently. After his victory in the Maekyung Daks Open, Kingston finished third in the Macau Open and then second in last week’s Philippine Open after briefly eading the Asian Tour event.
