OUTGOING coach David Lloyd urged England here on Tuesday to replace him with an Englishman, suggesting foreign coaches would not have the passion needed for the job. “I was asked about my opinion and in my own mind, I’m absolutely certain it has to be an Englishman,” he said. “I just think that if it isn’t, then it’s just somebody who is drawing a salary.” Lloyd, whose side crashed out of the tournament after the first round, is quitting to take up a job as a television pundit. Several candidates are being considered for the job, including former England Test batsman Bob Woolmer. He has been in charge of the mighty South Africans for five years, but quits after the World Cup. Lloyd, however, is advocating Leicestershire’s coach Jack Birkenshaw, claiming: “He would slip into the job very nicely, he would be easy with the players … he’s a real cricket man, steeped in the game.”
