FERREIRA WINS AS BECKER RAINED OUT

WAYNE Ferreira beat last year’s runner-up Laurence Tieleman of Italy 3-6 7-5 6-1 in the at Queen’s Club’s $750000 London grass-court championships on Monday. Ferreira, the 10th seed and 1992 champion, managed to complete his game before other matches were washed out. Triple Wimbledon champion and four-times winner at Queen’s, Boris Becker, met Czech Petr Korda in a keenly-anticipated opening round match but the players were able to complete only one game before rain stopped play. Becker, who has said he will play just three more tournaments before retiring — Queen’s, Wimbledon and Stuttgart in July — will complete his match against the 1998 Australian Open champion on Tuesday. He leads 1-0. In the only other match that was completed, 12th-seeded Australian Jason Stoltenberg beat Zimbabwe’s Wayne Black 6-3 6-4.
