PHIRI WON’T BE PROSECUTED

THE state has decided not to prosecute music legend Ray Phiri on three criminal charges that his former landlord laid against him in March. Senior public prosecutor Marius van Heerden said on Friday that he decided not prosecute Phiri, but declined to give reasons for his decision. Phiri was facing charges of housebreaking, theft and trespassing after he broke into his rented house at Moseley farm near Barberton on March 26. Phiri broke into the house after his two children telephoned him at his home in Benoni and told him the sheriff of the court had locked them out because he had not paid his rent for three months. The rent arrears stood at R11400, but Phiri had paid the money on 19 March, a week before the eviction order was given. The payment had not been noticed.
