A STRIKE by 260 workers on a section of the R2-billion Maputo Corridor toll road continued over the weekend after they refused to accept an apology from a manager who called them ”kaffirs”. The man who made the remark is William Botha, a director of Stocks & Stocks, Basil Read and Bouygues (SBB) construction consortium. James Phongolo, a shop steward for the Construction and Allied Workers’ Union (CAWU) said Botha made the remark during a dispute last week over pay for workers who sacrificed leave days to help catch up on a work backlog. Botha sparked the row, announcing that workers who refused to work on leave days would not be paid. Workers protested, and Botha remarked: ”I am tired of these kaffirs.” The workers immediately downed tools and were still on strike on Sunday. The workers are demanding R5000 each for Botha’s insult, plus a proper apology from him.
