FACTORY EXPLOSION INJURES 45

A TOTAL of 45 people received medical treatment after an explosion at a factory in Brits in North West on Thursday. Brits Medi-Clinic nursing service manager Emily Wasserman said two people had sustained 80% burn wounds and were taken to Pretoria East Hospital. Four who sustained 20% to 30% burn wounds are in the clinic’s intensive care unit and will be operated on later on Thursday. Twelve of the patients are being treated for mild burns and respiratory problems because of the gas they inhaled. Police spokesperson Sergeant Erica Roos said 27000 litres of Hexane liquid gas, which is used to extract oil from paprika, exploded and burnt out at Extracted Oils and Resin Pty Ltd at about 8.40am.
