NEW DR CONGO PEACE TALKS NEXT WEEK

A JOINT military commission to monitor the Democratic Republic of Congo ceasefire will be set up at a meeting starting in Lusaka on Monday. Zimbabwe’s Foreign Minister Stan Mudenge said on Friday that the meeting of ministers from countries involved in the conflict was also expected to discuss continued clashes in the DRC. “We want to set up the joint military commission. I cannot say how long the meeting will last, it will depend on the discussions.” In terms of a ceasefire agreed at a summit in Lusaka last Saturday, each of the warring parties will propose two officers for the joint commission. The ceasefire was signed by the six governments involved in the conflict — the DRC, Angola, Namibia and Zimbabwe on the one side, and Rwanda and Uganda on the side of DR Congo rebels. But it was not signed by the rebels themselves because of an internal leadership wrangle.
