Madiba plans quiet birthday celebration

Retired president Nelson Mandela will have a quiet 81st birthday on Sunday with initial plans to distribute to charities funds collected during his 80th birthday year falling flat. Mandela, two months into his retirement as head of state, will spend July 18 with his family in his Johannesburg home, a spokesperson said on Friday, refusing to be drawn on the guest list. Mandela’s last birthday, also the day of his marriage to Graca Machel, was accompanied by energetic celebrations and effusive tributes from across the world. The 80th Birthday Promotions Company, established a year ago to honour Mandela by raising funds for social needs, said then that the funds, channelled to the Nelson Mandela Millenium Fund, would be distributed on Mandela’s 81st birthday. But this idea has been shelved, probably until next year, a spokeswoman said.
