COETZER ELIMINATES KOURNIKOVA

THE The A and P Tennis Classic officially struck out with its headline attractions as Amanda Coetzer took advantage of Anna Kournikova’s serve and defeated the Russian teenager 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-final on Friday night. The ouster of the fan favourite completes a bad week for the organizers of the exhibition event. Jana Novotna, the 1998 Wimbledon champion, withdrew on Tuesday before the start of the tournament because of a bad ankle. Six-time winner Steffi Graf was forced to retire from her match on Thursday night after becoming nauseous in the third set. Kournikova was treated for severe dehydration and cramping, tournament director John Korff said.
