NEW PRAWN PLAN FOR MOZ

THE Mozambican government has adopted a new strategy for prawn fishing to ensure the sustainability of the multi-million dollar industry, the agriculture and fisheries ministry said on Friday. Ministry boss Carlos Agostinho do Rosario told reporters that the purpose of the strategy was to ensure “sustainable exploitation of resources so that we always have stocks of prawns”. The new move concerns the size of the fishing vessels involved and the quality of the prawns fished. The measures are intended to guarantee increased income both for private fishing companies and for the national economy. Prawn exports rank high among Mozambique’s foreign currency earners. Some 8000 tons of prawns fished from the country’s waters every year earn the country around $70-million in foreign exchange.
