ELEVEN DIE IN PIT ACCIDENT

ELEVEN pupils died at Igomtwe Village, Mufindi District, in Tanzania on Wednesday when a pit they were digging collapsed on them. A statement from the Iringa Regional Commissioner, Mr Njelu Kasaka said that the pupils were buried by the sand. Mr Kasaka said the pupils were covered with sand, following the collapse of a hole in which they were digging and collecting sand. The pupils were collecting sand to build a classroom for their school through a self-help project, Mr Kasaka stated. He also added that investigations will establish the exact circumstances of deaths. Meanwhile, Mr Kasaka on behalf of President Benjamin Mkapa, has sent a condolence message to the parents and relatives together with friends of the 11 pupils.
