OFFICIALS in the outgoing military regime in Nigeria stole around four billion naira (R400-million) in the five days before the returning power to civilians, a top official was quoted as saying on Sunday. The military handed over power to President Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, ending more than 16 years of military rule in Africa’s most populous country. Power and Steel Minister Bola Ige said there was large scale looting by former office holders in the days running up to the handover. He gave as an example his own ministry where officials stole 400 million dollars via phoney projects.
