KENYA needs to import 180000 metric tons or seven million bags of maize to prevent massive hunger by the end of this year, the Sunday Standard newspaper reported. Another 450000 tons of maize and a similar amount of wheat will have to be imported again next year because experts predict this season’s produce will not meet the country’s food needs. Mid last week, the state-owned National Cereals and Produce Board said that the country’s maize reserves were on the verge of depletion. In May this year, the government was also warned of the impending food crisis, but failed to act on the warning and two reminders.
