THE Western Cape provincial government is introducing toll roads to pay for the R800-million backlog in the maintenance and upgrading of roads in the province. The province is also introducing partly manned weighbridges in the near future to catch the drivers of overladen trucks. The government has tabled a Toll Road Bill in the provincial legislature and it is expected to be approved within weeks. The province recently put on hold a R39 million road-repairing scheme because of its funding crisis. It is expected that first of the toll roads will be on the N7 on the west coast, which could be extended to Nuwerus, north of Vredendal.
