PRISON WITHOUT WATER

THE South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights on Tuesday accused the Department of Correctional Services of “flagrantly” violating the constitutional right of about 500 prisoners at the Leeukop prison outside Johannesburg where there has been no water for two days. Sapohr spokesman Phineas Mnambathi said prisoners are living in inhumane conditions. He said the stench from the ablution facilities has become unbearable. “The prisons are filled to capacity and ablution facilities simply cannot take the strain,” he said.
