THE Truth Commission on Monday granted amnesty to 60 members of an African National Congress-aligned self-defence squad for various apartheid-era crimes, including murder. The group operated in the violence-torn Thokoza and Katlehong townships east of Johannesburg, where over 2000 people are estimated to have lost their lives in political clashes between members of the ANC and rival Inkatha Freedom Party between 1990 and 1994. The Truth and Reconciliation Commission pardoned the armed self defence unit because its amnesty committee found their acts were politically motivated and they had disclosed all relevant facts — prerequisites for amnesty.
