THE National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) held a meeting in Johannesburg on Friday to consider the notice of possible protest action tabled by Cosatu regarding job losses. The reasons tabled by the Congress of SA Trade Unions as motivation for the intended protest action included employers’ ability to retrench workers through Section 189 of the Labour Relations Act, the insolvency laws, interest rates, the restructuring of government-owned enterprises and the reduction of import tariffs. At a meeting attended by senior representatives from government, business, the Reserve Bank and the union, it was agreed that a further meeting would be held on August 31, Nedlac said in a statement on Friday.
