THE annual summit of the 14-nation Southern African Development Community opened in the Mozambican capital Maputo on Wednesday. The one-day summit is expected to be dominated by efforts to resolve regional conflicts, including wars in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Angola. Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe are represented by their presidents, while the Seychelles, Swaziland, Lesotho and Mauritius are represented by their prime ministers. DRC President Laurent Kabila left Maputo Tuesday ahead of the summit, due to a deterioration of the military situation back home, according to DRC officials.
