MALAWIAN President Bakili Muluzi is furious over the fact that phone lines to his Sanjika Palace were cut when thieves stole cables from a main telephone exchange. Speaking at an airport news conference on his return on Thursday from a summit of southern African leaders in Maputo — from where he had been unable to contact his home — Muluzi warned the thieves they face dire consequences. “If you are arrested, there will be no question of bail,” he said. “We can’t talk about human rights here. Does human rights mean inconveniencing other people?” The parastatal phone corporation has offered a reward for the arrest of the thieves.
