ALLEGED triple murderer Charles Raboroko, a teacher at a Soweto school, on Wednesday told the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court he had not attended court on Tuesday because he was unable to pay bribe money to prison warders. He said he lacked funds to pay warders at the Johannesburg Prison who told him to give them the money to take him to court. The magistrate expressed her disbelief at Raboroko’s explanation, but similar allegations have been made by other prisoners during the past six to eight months. The going rate for a blanket in prison, to be taken to court, or for a prisoner to be called when visitors arrive is reported to be anything between R2 and R5 at a time. Defence advocate Paul Shapiro was not available on Wednesday and Raboroko was ordered to appear in court on Thursday. Shapiro is expected to explain to the court the procedure he will follow to have Raboroko sent for mental observation.
