CAF REJECTS CLUB BIDS

THE Confederation of African Football (CAF) has rejected demands by ASEC of Cote d’Ivoire and Esperance of Tunisia that they compete in the first world club championships. Brazil will host the event from January 5-14 and ASEC believe they should represent Africa as holders of the African Champions League title. Esperance base their case on being the only team to win the three CAF club competitions. CAF spokesman Dr Viken Djizmedjian said although the deadline for entrants in the eight-club championship is October 3, world governing body FIFA had agreed that the winners of the Champions League in December can compete. ASEC and Esperance are among eight challengers for the title with Al-Ahly of Egypt, Dynamos of Zimbabwe, Hearts of Oak of Ghana, Raja Casablanca of Morocco, Saint Louisienne of Reunion and Shooting Stars of Nigeria.
