NO 9999 GLITCHES

THE Y2K Decision Support Centre said on Friday there were no “9999” computer glitches reported in South Africa. The “9999” problem is due to Thursday’s date being the 9th day of the 9th month in year 99 which in some computer programs is read as “end-of-file”. The problem caused the indefinite closure of China’s only automated exchange for corporate shares on Thursday. The “9999” computer glitch is seen as a dress rehearsal for “Y2K”, when some computers which only use a 2-digit field for the year, will read the year 2000 as the year 1900. The South African Y2K Centre was set up in March last year by the government to co-ordinate South Africa’s Y2K readiness.
