THE government of Democratic Republic of Congo president Laurent Kabila, has accused the rebels of breaking a ceasefire signed by all parties to the conflict. The general staff of the Congolese Armed Forces said that rebel forces on Wednesday carried out several attacks against government positions and are seeking to gain ground. He said the “most flagrant violations have been observed around Kabinda,” a key town for the defence of the diamond-rich town of Mbuji-Maya about 1000 kilometres east of Kinshasa. The army claims the attacks are part of a strategy developed by the rebels in contradiction with the Lusaka accord signed by six countries on July 10 and ratified by the rebels on August 31.
