OMAR CRACKS DOWN ON SPEEDSTERS

Transport Minister Dullah Omar on Monday promised a new crackdown against motorists who exceeded the speed limit, saying the government will step up law enforcement on the country’s roads from September. “If you exceed the speed limit and are caught driving at a dangerous speed, you will not have the option of a spot fine,” Omar told journalists in Johannesburg. “You will get arrested, taken to a police station, booked and locked up,” he said. “We are coming down very hard on people who commit these offences.” The new focus on speeding forms part of the government’s road safety campaign, Arrive Alive, which enters its third year next month. Omar said local officials could use their discretion in deciding what constituted “a dangerous speed”.
