UNIVERSITY of Cape Town vice-chancellor Dr Mamphele Ramphele on Tuesday accepted a nomination as one of four managing directors of the World Bank. Announcing the nomination, acting chairman of Council at UCT Tony Farr said that she will report directly to the president of the bank, Jim Wolfensohn. Ramphele will be based in Washington and will hold the portfolio of managing director: Human Development, with global responsibility for education, health and social services. Ramphele (51) was a co-founder of the radical Black Consciousness Movement in 1969 with slain anti-apartheid activist Steve Biko, and his one-time lover.
