SOME 40 tons of poisonous cheese condemned in South Africa has been imported into Zimbabwe and is being sold in the country’s supermarkets. The independent Daily News said the cheese was tested in neighbouring South Africa and found to contain two types of toxic bacteria which can cause abortion, damage liver and could be fatal. The government is considering suing the importer for putting people’s lives to danger. The report could not be immediately confirmed officially. The cheese is selling cheaper than the locally-produced brands. Health Minister Timothy Stamps said he learnt about it some two weeks ago and requested that the cheese be withdrawn from the market, but the importer has resisted. “The person who imported this cheese is totally resisting our attempts to remove the product off the shelves. He should look forward to a prosecution by my ministry,” Stamps said. Municipal health officers for the capital have instructed its officers to remove the deadly cheese from the market and destroy it.
