Graca Machel has provided inspired leadership on all levels — in Mozambique, South Africa and internationally — for many years, the University of Cape Town’s vice-chancellor Mamphela Ramphele said on Tuesday. She was responding to the announcement that Machel has accepted the position as chancellor of the university. Machel succeeds Harry Oppenheimer who was chancellor from 1967 to 1996. Machel will hold office for 10 years, until 2008. UCT said its electoral college elected Machel as chancellor on September 18 this year. She was out of the country at the time, but has accepted the results of the election.
