ADVERTISING industry watchdog body, Advertising Standards Authority, on Wednesday said that its banning of an anti-rape advert featuring Benoni-born Hollywood actor Charlize Theron was in response to complaints it received from “various sectors of the community”. The ASA statement comes amid a rising public outcry over the body’s decision the television ad on the grounds that it discriminates against men. Commenting on the commercial ASA executive director Deline Beukes said that, because the copy made references to South African men, “complainants were upset that they were considered either as rapists or as men who did not care about the rape as a societal concern.” The ASA said it did not receive any complaints in respect of the “Have you raped a woman?” commercial, also featuring Charlize Theron.
