WORLD BANK IN NIGERIA

WORLD Bank President James Wolfenson arrived in Nigeria early on Thursday for a two-day visit during which he is to meet President Olusegun Obasanjo and local leaders, officials said. Wolfenson is to make an address at an economic development conference on Thursday morning and then meet Obasanjo and key cabinet members for a working lunch. He is later to meet political leaders and attend an official dinner. On Friday he is to travel to Lagos, the business centre of Nigeria, to review World Bank projects and meet business and labour leaders. The World Bank in 1993 stopped making new loans to Nigeria, following the annulment of presidential elections by the military. The first new loans for a number of anti-poverty programmes are expected to be made shortly.
