BANANA TO BE TREATED IN SA

FORMER Zimbabwean president Canaan Banana, convicted this year of sex offences, has had his bail conditions relaxed so he can visit South Africa for medical treatment, it was announced Friday. The state news agency Ziana said the Supreme Court ruled that Banana could collect his passport and make the journey for attention to an undisclosed illness. Banana, 63, was convicted in the High Court in January on several charges of sexual assault and sodomy. Most of the offences were committed while he was president from 1980-1987. Banana was sentenced to an effective one year in jail and is on bail while awaiting an appeal to the Supreme Court against his conviction and sentence.
