AUSSIES, IRISH FURIOUS AFTER BANS

AUSTRALIAN and Irish officials on Tuesday night slammed decisions made by a World Cup disciplinary panel that decided to ban Aussie number eight Toutai Kefu and Irish lock Trevor Brennan. Kefu was earlier Tuesday suspended for two weeks – putting him out of Australia’s quarter-final on October 23 – while Brennan will be ruled out Ireland’s next two matches. The players were involved in a punch-up during Australia’s 23-3 win over Ireland at Lansdowne Road on Sunday. A second Australian player – centre Daniel Herbert – was found not guilty of a high-tackle charge resulting from the same match. Australian coach Rod Macqueen described Kefu’s sentence as “an injustice”, and said an appeal was almost certain to be lodged. The Irish appear equally angry about the Brennan ban. “I am very disappointed with the decision to impose a 10-day suspension which will rule Brennan out of our next two matches and I am reserving our right to appeal,” said Ireland team manager Donal Lenihan.
