ALL BLACKS SCORE 101 POINTS VS ITALY

WORLD Cup favourites New Zealand pulverised Italy 101-3, the highest score of the 1999 tournament, on Thursday after record-breaking performances by fullback Jeff Wilson and winger Jonah Lomu. Wilson broke the All Blacks’ career try record, held by former winger John Kirwan, with his second try of three in the group B game. Wilson now has 37 tries to his name. Winger Jonah Lomu scored two tries to break the all-time Cup record of 11, held by England’s Rory Underwood. The All Blacks scored 14 tries in all and flyhalf Tony Brown scored 36 points – 11 conversions, three penalties and one try – in a superlative display of 15-man rugby. The win sealed their place in the quarter-finals. It was the second highest score in World Cup history – the highest was also by New Zealand in a 145-17 defeat of Japan in 1995. New Zealand had made 11 changes from the side that beat England 30-16 on Saturday but the reserves, boosted by a wonderful display by Wilson, crushed the Italians up front to give their backs a field day.
