ALL tourist guides in South Africa will have to be registered with the government in future in terms of the Tourism Amendment Bill, which was tabled in Parliament on Friday. The new national registrar of tourist guides will be located in the Department of Environment Affairs and Tourism, replacing the register administered at present by the South African Tourism Board (Satour). There will also be provincial registrars of tourist guides, with the ac tual registration function of guides being devolved to the provinces. It was aimed at “developing a socially, environmentally and culturally responsible tourist guiding sector” and this would in turn contribute to the development of internationally competitive tourism industry in South Africa.
