US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright embarks on Sunday on a six-nation tour of sub-Saharan Africa to focus on pushing peace, democracy and economic liberalization and praising reform efforts. Reduced by four days due to domestic political considerations and to make room to attend the funeral of former Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere, the trip begins in earnest on Monday with a whirlwind tour of Guinea and Sierra Leone before stops in Mali, Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania. US officials said the trip will concentrate on accelerating Africa’s integration into the global economy by promoting trade and investment, conflict resolution, democracy and human rights. It will also underline the importance of combating transnational threats, including terrorism, narcotics and HIV/AIDS.
