TONGAN prop Ngalu Tau’ofo has been banned for 28 days following his dismissal in Friday’s World Cup clash against England at Twickenham. Tau’ofo, a former police officer who plays for Pontypridd, was sent off by Australian referee Wayne Erickson four minutes before half time. His punch from behind on England flanker Richard Hill reduced the Tongans to 14 men and England ran riot to book their place in next Wednesday’s quarter-final play-offs with a 101-10 massacre. Tau’ofo was suspended by a World Cup disciplinary committee today, but with Tonga already out of the tournament, he will miss no international matches. However, the ban will prevent him from resuming his Pontypridd career in the Welsh-Scottish League until the middle of next month. So far in World Cup 99, 11 players have been cited for foul play, and a further four – Tau’ofo, Fijian Marika Vunibaka, Canadian flanker Dan Baugh and South African centre Brendan Venter – sent off.
