GHANA UNDER SPOTLIGHT

AFRICAN Football Confederation executive committee members meet in Burkina Faso on Thursday to discuss the 2000 Nations Cup finals in Ghana and Nigeria. CAF president Issa Hayatou of Cameroon left Ghana with mixed feelings last month after inspecting stadiums and other facilities for the biennial showcase of football on the continent. Hayatou and his delegation said the pitches and training grounds in Accra and Kumasi are below international standards and could damage the image of African football. “Many of the best footballers in Africa will be on show in Ghana and if the pitches are not good it will affect their performances and the prestige of the competition,” Hayatou warned. The president said VIP and media facilities at the Accra Sports Stadium will have to be expanded with more than 1000 journalists expected to attend the first co-hosted tournament.
