KZN IN COMMAND

KWAZULU-NATAL dominated the second day’s play of the four-day SuperSport Series match against Western Province at Newlands on Friday, thanks to a solid 135-run partnership from skipper Dale Benkenstein and Errol Stewart. The two took the score from 129 for three to 264 before Benkenstein was excellently caught at third-man by Ryan Joffe for 71. Stewart played the anchor role with an unbeaten 73, as he steered his side to 290 for five in reply to WP’s 222 all out on the first day. The visitors got off to a bright start with openers Doug Watson and Mark Bruyns looking comfortable in the face of some mediocre bowling from the Western Province opening pair of Roger Telemachus and Ryan Joffe. The pair put on 85 for the first wicket before Bruyns was caught behind by keeper Thami Tsolkile off the bowling of former South African international Brian McMillan. Andrew Hudson scored 23 and watched as Watson threw his wicket away with a bad shot to fine leg where he was caught by Renier Munnik off the bowling of paceman Roger Telemachus for 62. KwaZulu-Natal are in a commanding position to go for the outright win. — MWP
