CHILD RAPISTS LIKELY TO WALK FREE

THE Soweto child protection unit says it will be difficult to convict four Soweto boys accused of raping a two-year-old girl, because they are under the age of 14. Police are still searching for the boys, aged between seven and nine years, after they allegedly raped a toddler in the backyard of a house in Orlando West. The child’s mother had left the little girl with her grandmother on Saturday afternoon while she was attending a wedding. A neighbour, seeing the toddler playing with older children in the backyard of a nearby house, went to investigate. The children fled and the neighbour found the child, naked and crying, in the yard. A district surgeon at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital confirmed the child had been penetrated. Children under the age of seven cannot be convicted for rape because it is considered medically impossible. The court will more than likely appoint a social worker to evaluate the children. Police are following up a number of leads and expect to arrest the boys soon.
