ROOF TO STAY SHUT

THE retractable roof on Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium will not be closed for the World Cup final, organisers said on Wednesday.

“It could only have been considered if we had received written requests from both teams and it is my understanding that we have not done so,” a spokeswoman said.

France and Australia, the teams in Saturday’s final, expressed opposing views this week on whether the tournament should stage the first indoor rugby international.

Bad weather during two Cup matches in Cardiff has caused the pitch of the brand new stadium to cut up badly and has reduced the entertainment for fans.

French flanker Olivier Magne said on Tuesday he wanted the roof to remain open, but Australian captain John Eales has said he felt it would be better to have the roof shut, especially if the weather was bad.
