US GUNRUNNERS TO WALK

THREE Americans jailed in Zimbabwe for one year for illegal possession of arms of war will be released on Saturday, the weekly Financial Gazette reported. Their freedom effectively renders Attorney General Patrick Chinamasa’s appeal to the Surpreme Court against their “lenient” sentences an academic exercise. The paper quotes unnamed sources saying that the cabinet discussed the case this week. Gary Blanchard, Joseph Pettijohn and John Dixon were sentenced to a year in jail for possessing weapons of war and attempting to take them aboard an aircraft. A ruling based on claims that they had been tortured by the state security agents later saw the sentence remitted by a third.
